Ailabouni is an adjunct professor of music at Luther College in Decorah, IA where he directs the Jazz Band and jazz combos, teaches courses in improvisation and jazz theory and arranging, and offers private lessons in jazz improvisation and trumpet performance.
The Luther College Jazz Band is 20-member group which performs regularly throughout the year including Family Weekend events, the Homecoming Jazz Night at Marty's, and its own formal concert each semester.
The ensemble gives students a solid foundation in the jazz tradition of big band swing while at the same time exploring more contemporary genres and new jazz compositions and arrangements. Jazz Band helps prepare students for eventual membership in the Luther College Jazz Orchestra, one of the four main touring ensembles at Luther.
Jazz Combos at Luther College offer students the opportunity to develop jazz performance skills through the study of improvisation, interaction, and time feel in the context of small groups. Analytical listening to essential jazz recordings is central. Combo students learn how to perform in a jam session environment, play in various styles, and develop arranging and composition abilities. An emphasis is placed on individual expression, group identity, and collaborative acumen in the pursuit of swinging, soulful music making.
The Ailabouni private studio includes students focused on classical trumpet performance and jazz improvisation. In both areas of study, repertoire, listening, technique, efficiency, and creativity are emphasized. Lessons are personalized to provide challenging and rewarding materials to study on a weekly basis.
